Services

Sophia Group is interested in responding to the community's needs in any way that helps people focus on the development of egalitarian relationships, peaceful community, and meaningful living. The most common and popular work we do is summarized here.

Parent Workshops

Our popular and immensely practical parenting series Winning Your Child's Cooperation teaches a broad approach to family enrichment, as well as concrete techniques to addreess common parent struggles and challenging child misbehavior. Parents learn to step into the child's subjective social world and lead the child in ways that move well beyond the use of rewards and punishment. Parents feel a powerful shift toward working with, not against, their children, even when setting limits.

We offer a follow-up or "advanced" workshop that allows parents more time to discuss and apply methods to their unique family situation. Each week, after some content review, parents have a chance to help each other or ask questions of the facilitator about what the next step is for their family.

Parent Coaching

Many parents don't want the learning to end with our workshops. Others desire more individualized attention than a workshop can offer. Coaching is a series of consultation meetings geared toward helping parents reach specific goals or resolve specific troubling behavior in their family. More straight forward and often less expensive than psychotherapy, Parent Coaching is a strengths-based, directive process that does not involve a mental health diagnosis.

Family Counseling

At times, parents are concerned something more serious may be at play with a particular child. Perhaps parents are questioning if a developmental or emotional disorder is part of the problem. Therapists associated with Sophia Group are licensed to assess such situations and offer the most appropriate form of counseling for each unique child. We combine advanced training in psychotherapy and counseling with our strengths-based approach to working with families. The family's unique experience of the problem and their unique strengths are key factors in successful family work. We offer counseling services to children of all ages, including teenagers.

Individual Counseling

Whether enhancing life-contentment or working to relieve specific suffering, Sophia Group takes a counseling approach that is both client centered and empirically shown to be effective for the large majority of people seeking counseling. We avoid empty promises of clinical fads and look to consisent research findings and coherent, common-sense methods to guide our work.
